Appcelerator Titanium at Mobile 2.0

Yesterday I gave a presentation about the future of mobile development at the Mobile 2.0 conference in Mountain View, California. It was the battle of the current emerging players in the space (if you could call it a “battle”) : Appcelerator, Rhomobile and Phonegap. Of course, all three of us have much different [...]

Is the Enterprise ready for iPhone?

Today was a very busy day. I spoke about Appcelerator Titanium at the O’Reilly/360 Inside Mobile Conference in San Jose and later served on a discussion panel with Daniel Brusilovsky (Teens in Tech, Techcrunch), Phil Libin (CEO of Evernote) and Christian Sepulveda (Pivotal Labs).
I then spoke tonight at the iPhone Business Meetup in Santa [...]

I gave a talk this week at the Mountain View JavaScript meetup hosted by Google at the Google headquarters in Mountain View, California. Thanks to Michael Carter who hosts this event on a monthly basis.
Google Chrome OS – it’s a great time to be a web developer

With the announcement of Google Chrome OS tonight, it’s a great time to be a web developer. (And as an aside, I’m sure Redmond isn’t partying too hard either).

Why does the Google Chrome OS matter?
It’s not really a surprise that Google made the announcement. It’s been widely speculated for a long time that Google [...]

Russell Jurney’s blog post has spurred me out of my blog-laziness to talk about something I’m passionate about - starting companies and helping entrepreneurs. If you haven’t read his most excellent post, titled “The California State of Mind” - stop now and read it.
As a follow-up from his post, I wanted to share something [...]

AJAX Development: Scary Tales from AJAXWorld

Last week, we attended AJAXWorld in San Jose and chatted with developers about some amazing innovations happening within the AJAX community. Beyond their experiences with AJAX, we wanted to uncover developers’ opinions about the hottest trends in web app development and also their worst coding nightmares. In the spirit of Halloween, we compiled our findings into some fun (and spooky) videos.

Tough times, tough decisions

It’s time to hunker down and take my own advice - advice that I think every startup (and every business in general) should be considering right now.
The economic future is uncertain for everyone around the globe - and Appcelerator is not immune from this uncertainty. I’ve heard a lot of talk that the startup/VC [...]

The economic downturn and your startup

As everyone is aware, the global economic downturn is upon us and we’re all standing around trying to figure out what this means for all of us — especially us startups. I hope nobody is living in a bubble and believes we’re at the bottom and it can’t get much worse. This week was the equivalent of the web emmy’s for startups, called the Techcrunch 50. Most startups presenting had absolutely no business model. Except one that really stood out.
Right Side Up Development

Traditional Web development frameworks tightly couple the user interface (UI) and the server. This characteristic has two significant implications: prototyping is difficult and development is server-focused. The emergence and widespread adoption of AJAX has triggered a foundational change in Web application development.

What's Yahoo! Up To With RIA Widgets?

According to Yahoo!s developer site, ASTRA stands for 'ActionScript Toolkit for Rich Applications.' OK, I think I get it - or maybe not? So, I took a look at the components and examples on their website. What's up with these widgets? Why is Yahoo!, of all companies, doing this type of stuff? I get YUI. I also really dig their OpenID initiatives, very good stuff and about time. But, I don't get their Flash/Flex widgets.
